John Joseph 'Johnny Grandma' Matthews, 74, of Grand Anse, passed away peacefully, on Aug. 18, 2010, at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, with his family by his side.
He was a resident of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home in Port Hawkesbury.
Born in Louisdale, he was the son of the late John Dougald and Mary Irene (Marchand) Matthews. Johnny was an avid hunter, fisherman and a proud gardener. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing and contributing to a heated debate about politics. He instilled in his children the importance of hard work and honesty. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Delores (Cogswell) Matthews along with his seven children, Bert (Anna), Petit De Grat, John (Jackie), L'Ardoise, David (Janet), Louisdale, Dean (Brenda), Grand Anse, Scott at home, Lorrie (Mike), and Melinda (Mike), both of Grand Anse; 14 grandchildren, Stacey, Russell, Jasmine, Jessica, Micayla, David Jr., Megan, Zachary, Cody, Joshua, Michael, Monica, Hannah and Bradley; he is also survived by many brothers and sisters, Cassie MacRae, Black River, Edward, Thomas (Mary), both of Grand Anse, Suzanne Dorey (Velma), MacIntyre's Lake, Edna Cogswell (Charlie), Evanston, Arthur (Pauline), River Bourgeois, Carl, Dundee, Hubert (Marie), Grand Anse, Jean Linthorne (Joe), Stellarton, James, Fort McMurray, Alexander (Rose), Petit De Grat; sister-in-law, Cassie Matthews, Grand Anse; aunts, Margaret 'Peggy' Doliver, Halifax, Almeda Boudreau, Loretta Marchand, both of Louisdale and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Charlie, Wallace, George, and Mattie; sisters, Florence, Loretta, Rose; brother-in-law, Archie and sister-in-law, Florence. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. Burial will take place on Saturday morning August 21, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating.
Donations in Johnny's memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation (NS) or to the Alzheimer's Society (NS). Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home, Arichat.
