Peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at the St. Catharines General Hospital in her 80th year following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford on March 27, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Ann (MacInnis) Bates.
Predeceased by her husband, James (1995) and infant daughter, Mary Ann.
Loving mother of James (Mary), Tom, Patricia and Joanne (Scott) Dickinson. Dear grandmother of Christina (Steven Roach), Jamie (Peter) Pignotti, Daniel and Mark. She is survived by two brothers, Angus (Theresa) Bates, Lawrence 'Lonnie' Bates, both in New Waterford and one sister, Martina (Gabriel) Andrea in Sydney Mines. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
Leona was predeceased by three sisters, Loretta, Catherine, and Carmel (Bob) Hubbard.
She was a graduate of the St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Glace Bay (1952).
Funeral mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Thorold, Ont.
