It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Lawrence 'Larry' Corkin of 1 Thomas St., Scotchtown on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at his residence with his loving family by his side.
Born Aug. 21, 1929 in Springhill, N.S. to the late Thomas and Daisy (Williams) Corkin. At a young age Larry new the value of hard work, he moved to Toronto, Ont., at the young age of 17 and worked hard to provide for his family. His first job was on the lake boats in Thunder Bay, Ont. from 1949-1952, and then he was employed at Swift Canada from 1952 until his retirement in 1987.
In 1989 Larry moved to Cape Breton with his loving wife Mary Miller by his side. He enjoyed his retirement by becoming a member of the Army and Navy Air force Unit 217, New Waterford where he made lifelong friends while playing pool and Wednesday crib.
Left to mourn is his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Miller; son, Norman; daughters, Janet and Bernice (Rudy); his brother, Howard Tweed, Ont.; sisters, Evie Barton, Daisy Chapman, all of Springhill, N.S.; grandchildren, Tommy, Corey, Tyler, Carly, Amanda and seven great-grandchildren and his little buddy Alexander, whom he watched over with great love and affection, also his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Ferguson, Springhill, N.S., Terry Miller and Robbie Miller (Glen) and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Thomas and Daisy Corkin; he was predeceased by his brothers, Tom, Doug and Norman Corkin; sisters, Hilda Brown, and Lily Rolph; also brother-in-law, Robert Miller and mother-in-law, Jenny Miller.
At the request of Larry cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Mclellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with The Rev, Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery Scotchtown. A reception in Lawrence's honour will be held immediately following at the Army Navy Air force Unit 217, Wilson Ave., New Waterford, all are welcome.
