Rear Admiral (ret'd) John Alexander Charles, of Sooke, B.C., March 27, 1918 - September 25, 2010. Born in Rouleau, Sask. Veteran of World War II and Korea, former Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, and Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff. Officer, gentleman, scholar and forester, he lived a life principled by Truth, Duty and Valour, and enriched many with his wisdom, vision, drive and humanity. Predeceased by his dear wife Mary (née Parker). Devoted to his children - Anne, John (Maîre), Charles (Kathleen), Roger (Catriona), Christopher, Michael (Lynn), Julia (Don), Jennifer; grandchildren - Edward (Kristen), Kevin (Adeline), Evan, Peter, Paul, Katherine, Jamie; and great-granddaughter - Autumn Jade. Survived by his brother Ernest, of Kamloops, B.C. and sisters-in-law Jill and Carole Parker of Nfld., and their families. Private funeral, followed by committal at sea and a Celebration of Life at Royal Roads University on Oct. 7, 2010. Sands Funeral Chapel, Colwood, B.C.
