SAMUEL ROY PAWLUK
1925 ~ 2009
Samuel Pawluk passed away on June 4, 2009, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, nine days after receiving a diagnosis of cancer. Sam was born on April 8, 1925, in Swift Current, SK. At school, Sam was extremely popular with students and teachers alike. He proved to be exceptionally strong, but never a bully. At recess he could be found in the schoolyard happily wrestling several students simultaneously trying to knock him down. It was impossible to get him off balance and when he was playing hockey, the other side was careful to avoid him. Sam was unbeatable at arm wrestling except on one occasion when Ole Olson got lucky. He carried this strength and unbeatable spirit into his work life. During his lifetime he worked as a mail contractor in Swift Current, a signal foreman for the CPR across the prairie provinces, and a propane deliveryman for Federated Co-op. Sam will be remembered for his resourcefulness; he loved the challenge of something that needed fixing. Fans of the Trading Post radio call-in show will miss his frequent calls. Sam also enjoyed swapping stories while spending time with his many friends located all over the prairies. Especially dear to him were Eva Brewer, John and Adeline Chickoski, and traveling buddy, Ivan Livingston. Sam is survived by his grandson, Andrew; sister, Anne Longstreet of Ottawa; brother, Bill Pollock of Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; beloved son, Samuel Pawluk, Jr.; brothers, Mike Budnick, Nick Budnick, and George Pawluk; as well as sisters, Mary Shygera, Rose Bottineau, and Joyce Rosa. At Sam’s request, there will be no formal funeral proceedings. Sam’s cremated remains will be laid to rest next to his beloved son, Samuel Jr. in Swift Current, SK.
