Karen Hughes passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at Kaiser Hospital, Riverside, after a short but devastating illness.
Karen was born in Wahpeton, N.D., in 1942. She and her family moved to Pomona in 1952. She attended local schools and was a very bright student. Following high school, she enrolled at Cal Poly, gaining her undergraduate degree. Following this phase, she enrolled at San Diego State where she received her Bachelors and Teachers Certificate. Karen immediately applied to all the schools who were hiring that year and decided upon Thousand Oaks High. She taught at there until she was transferred to Westlake High, where she remained until early retirement.
Karen married Bernie Hughes in 1968. He survives her, as do her sons, Shaun and Alex, and their wives, Julia and Jennifer; stepchildren, Alexander, Colleen, Ian, Rorie and Breton; plus a number of cousins in this area and in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
An Honorarium of Karen’s life and memory will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 19, at Menifee Lakes Country Club. Private interment was held at the Riverside National Cemetery.
