SHANNON, Belmont Joseph – 85, August 21, 1925 - November 11, 2010, passed away quietly at home in Port Hawkesbury.
Born and raised in Plaster Rock, N.B. on the Tobique River, he was a son of the late James M. and Gertrude (Ward) Shannon.
At seventeen he took part in the Normandy invasion, landing on Juno Beach with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and fought with the Canadian Army through France, Belgium and Holland. After returning home in 1947, he married Jocelyn Ryan. They started their family in Edmundston, New Brunswick. In 1961 when Nova Scotia Pulp Ltd. opened in Port Hawkesbury, Belmont took the opportunity to build his life with his young family in Cape Breton. Belmont retired from Stora Forest Industries as a supervisor in 1987. Belmont was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Port Hawkesbury and a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for more than 60 years, in particular Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. He was a member and past president of the branch, and served on the RCL Nova Scotia Provincial Command. He was especially proud of the creation of Veteran’s Memorial Park and the work he and fellow Legion members undertook to ensure a lasting legacy to veterans. Belmont held the words “. . . at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them” close. Belmont enjoyed fishing hunting and camping. Whether in New Brunswick or out on River Denys dad loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping and making trips ‘home’ to Plaster Rock to visit with family. Dad enjoyed several return trips to Europe with mom, and later to celebrate the liberation of Holland. In 2008 he was able to enjoy a cruise with family in the Caribbean. Dad, Poppy, Poppa will be dearly missed.
Belmont was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 2001.
He is survived by his children; James (Carol) Shannon, Havre Boucher, Faye (Donald) Theriault, Dartmouth, Brian (Bernadette) Shannon, New Glasgow, Audrey Shannon, Port Hawkesbury.
