Born In: Hortonville, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born: February 27th, 1922

Passed in: Pasadena, California, United States
Passed on: November 6th, 2010

Ruth A. Forsyth-Smith (whose maiden name was Ruth Audrey Dennison), a native of Nova Scotia, Canada and a lifelong Canadian citizen, passed away peacefully in Pasadena, California on 6 November, 2010. Ruth, whose maternal and paternal forebears first settled in Nova Scotia in the 1760's, was the widow of the late John Forsyth-Smith, to whom she had been married for fifty-three years at the time of his passing on 9 June, 2000. Born in a family farmhouse in Hortonville, Nova Scotia on 27 February, 1922, Ruth was a precocious youngster who, upon entering school, was immediately assigned to the Fourth Grade, and she graduated from High School at age fifteen. As early as seven years of age, she was often invited by her paternal grandmother to serve as a Bridge partner in family card games. In the late 1930's, Ruth went to work for the Royal Bank of Canada and eventually became Chief Teller at its Wolfville, Nova Scotia branch, where she was charged with training newly minted tellers. Early in 1944, she married Vic Robinson, a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, but sadly she was widowed just a few months later when he was reported missing in action. On 3 May, 1947, she married John Forsyth-Smith, who had returned to the Royal Bank after distinguished service as a Flight Navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, and shortly thereafter accompanied him abroad as he pursued a career as an international banker with posts in Trinidad, Hong Kong, New York, London and lastly in Nassau, Bahamas. (During her Hong Kong years, Ruth served as Bridge mentor to card-playing aficionados in the Canadian expatriate community.) A stylish and intellectually vibrant woman, Ruth continued to read several books a week up until shortly before her passing, and she was always an interesting conversationalist. Ever the lady, she nevertheless was right at home with championship show horses, and she loved her many canine companions over the years (the most recent of whom was "Princess", a purebred Saint Bernard.) Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jacalyn Forsyth-Smith Page (Dennis) of Pasadena, California, and by her grandson, Trevor John MacLeod Bryson (Anouska), of Santa Monica, California. Ruth, who truly had a zest for life, was much loved and will be missed by all who know her.
