It is with sadness that our family announces the passing of Donald Campbell.
He will be forever missed by his wife of 59 years, Alice (McKenna) and children, Carol O'Neil (Raymond), Cole Harbour, Sara Campbell, Halifax, Therese Reynolds, Dartmouth, Peter (Donnecka), Port Hastings, John (Glenna), Kanata, Ont., Joan Fortune (Gary), Cole Harbour, Patrick (Kelly), Cole Harbour and son-in-law, D.J. Campbell. He was much loved by grandchildren, James, Erin and Meghan O'Neil; Christopher Campbell; Joel, Ben and Erica Reynolds; Liam and Alicia Campbell; Jessica, Catherine and Karen Campbell; Ryan, Matthew and Stewart Fortune; Daniel and Leah Campbell. He is survived by extended family members, Mona and Erik Olsen, Sarnia, Ont.; Owen and Isabel McKenna, Dartmouth; Harold and Janet McKenna, Antigonish, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary; son-in-law, Elwood; brothers and sisters, Florence, Marguerite, Jim, Gertrude, Joe, Christina, Bernard, Frank, Agnes, and Joseph.
Donnie was born in Sydney to the late Peter and Jessie (Kennedy). He graduated from St. F.X.U. and Dalhousie University with a degree in pharmacy. His education was interrupted during the Second World War, when he served as a navigator in the air force. He began his career in pharmacy at McKenna's Drug Store, Antigonish and in 1959 moved his family to Port Hawkesbury to open the first pharmacy in the community.
His parents passed away before he reached the age of 13. His determination led him to overcome many obstacles to create a life for his wife and children. In a quiet and unassuming way he served the community of Port Hawkesbury and the surrounding area with care and compassion.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Regional Occupational Centre Society (ROC) Centre, Port Hawkesbury.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green's Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Visitation will be on Monday, Dec. 13 from 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. A celebration of Donnie's life will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Port Hawkesbury with Fr. Neil McKenna officiating.
