GARNET HINTHER

GARNET HINTHER

Born: November 3rd, 1956

Passed on: December 23rd, 2010

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Garnet at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. His last hours were spent with family and his best friend at his side. Garnet was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan. The family later moved to Moose Jaw where Garnet received his schooling. Garnet sang in the Moose Jaw Boys' Choir, took piano lessons, and played trombone in the Moose Jaw Lions Band. He was a prairie boy and spent many happy times with his Beach farm cousins in the Ernfold district, west of Moose Jaw. Garnet graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1979 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. He played in the University Wind Ensemble (orchestra) under the direction of Dwain Nelson. Garnet was a social and outgoing student with a quick wit, who enjoyed Irish bands and dances at The Hat. He also did a few stints with the College Nine. Garnet supported his education with demanding physical jobs on the CPR tie and steel gangs. After graduation he taught band students in Kelvington, Outlook and Saskatoon. Throughout his teaching career many of his performing groups received awards of excellence. Garnet was the promoter in the family and persuaded his parents to purchase a home and farmland in the Aberdeen district in 1980. He worked tirelessly alongside his father on weekends and during the summer on the farm. Garnet's passion was the land and the farm. The family was assisted by friends and neighbours, who were always there to help, fix breakdowns or do custom work when needed. In 1988 Garnet married Brenda (nee Yokubouskis) and they built a home adjacent to his parents' farm. Garnet's experienced several health problems in 1991 that ended his teaching career and farming activities. Garnet missed his social life and the extended family gatherings that he was no longer able to attend. He never complained or sought sympathy - only acceptance that he was unable to participate. He always maintained his optimistic perspective of life. Brenda and Garnet were blessed with three children, Brittany, Palmer and Royal. He maintained a keen interest in his children's music and martial arts activities. Garnet's motivation to keep going through his illness was the children. Brenda continued on with great strength and resilience during trying times. Despite his illness, Garnet was a source of comfort and support for his family and parents. He will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Richard Hinther (1997); and special uncles, aunts, and cousins. He is survived by: his wife, Brenda and the children, his mother, Joy Beach; brothers, Royal (Cathy) and Ross (Maggie Venier); and sisters, Gaylia (Anthony Fallon) and Twyla-Orabeth (Wayne Nagel), and their families. The family wishes to thank the ICU staff of RUH, and the Neuro-ICU and ENT staff of the Alberta University Hospital for their skill and attentive care. A Memorial Service will be held at Knox United Church, Saskatoon (838 Spadina Crescent E) on Saturday, January 8th at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Saskatchewan, Music Department Scholarship Fund are appreciated. Arrangements in care of David Schurr - MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200). www.mourningglory.ca
