Barbara Elizabeth Conrod - 81, formerly of Kentville, passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario. Born in Stellarton, NS, she was the only child of the late Marjorie (Smith) and Howard Murray. She attended Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor. As a young girl she enjoyed riding and life on the farm. Barbara was a keen actress, and became acquainted with her husband-to-be, Eric at the Anglican Young People's Association drama group at All Saints Cathedral in Halifax. They married in 1954. After living and working in Halifax for several years, and where Barrie and Karen were born, the family moved to Kentville. In Kentville, Barbara and her husband became active members of St. James' Church. Barbara taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a member of the ladies guild and altar guild. She and her Eric were keen gardeners, and Barbara liked to share the fruits of their labours with cooking and baking. Barbara enjoyed travel, around the Maritimes, across Canada, and abroad. She and Eric later became parishioners of St. John's Church in Port Williams where she sang in the choir, and participated in the quilting sessions as well as many other church activities. After Eric's death in November, 2001, Barbara moved to Kitchener to be near her son and his family. Since then, she has been able to rely on Barrie's constant support and care, as well as his regular visits with her favourite specialty coffee. The family is grateful for the conscientious care which Winston Park Nursing Home has provided for the past two years. She was a determined and reliable person, with a strong sense of duty. She had a good sense of humour, a generous heart, and a lively faith which guided her life. She is survived by a son, Barrie Conrod (Heather Caron), Waterloo; a daughter, Karen (Reverend George) Westhaver, Halifax; five grandchildren, Lindsay, Nicole, Evan; Clara and Charlotte. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There was no visitation. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at St. John's Anglican Church, Church Street, Port Williams, Reverend David Garrett officiating. Burial will take place in St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to St. John's Church (1505 Hwy # 358; Port Williams, NS B0P 1T0).
