Sister Anne MacLellan, 85, a Sister of Saint Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 in the 57th year of her religious life.
Born in Ben Eoin, C.B., Nova Scotia, Sister Anne was one of five children of the late Joseph and Margaret (MacIsaac) MacLellan.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1952, pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1954 and her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1957. Prior to entering the congregation, Sister Anne taught school for two years, following which she was employed in general office work for several years at McCurdy & Co. and at the Cape Breton County Clerk's office, both in Sydney. After her profession of vows, Sister Anne spent most of her life ministering in the field of social work and in spiritual and religious care in various hospitals owned by the congregation. Also, for several years she served in leadership roles within the congregation.
A member of the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers, Sister Anne graduated in 1969 with her B.A. degree from St. Francis Xavier University. In 1971 she earned her Masters in Social Work Degree from Carlton University, Ottawa. She, also, received a Diploma in Religious Education from University College of Cape Breton in 1981.
In Nova Scotia she ministered in spiritual and religious care at St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay and St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish as well as St. Michael's General Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta. While in social service ministry, she served with the following social work agencies, Glace Bay Family Welfare, Catholic Family Services of New Waterford, Family Services of Port Hawksbury, Catholic Charities and Family Services, both in Sydney.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Sadie MacKinnon, Mary Donovan and brothers, Martin and John.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Sunday, Jan. 9, at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Jan. 10, 2 p.m. in the Bethany chapel.
