Sybil Mary Maxwell, passed away peacefully in Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth surrounded by her loving family on Jan. 8, 2011.
Born Feb. 12, 1918 in Florence, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Maurice and Emma (Burton) Capstick. She lived most of her life in Cape Breton and the Annapolis Valley. In her younger years she attended the School for the Blind and worked for Moirs Chocolate Factory, Halifax. A devoted wife and mother, she was also a past member of St. Joseph's CWL, Bras d'Or and had been active in her community. She lived an independent life and never let her blindness hold her back from any challenge she faced. She was an inspiration to all who met and knew her. Her undying faith in God was the source of her courage and strength.
She is survived by her daughters, Corinne (Keith) Silver, Rockland, N.S., Sybil (Bruce) Redden, Berwick, N.S.; grandchildren, Robert Ledson, Kenneth (Annette) Ledson, Jeremy (Heather) Ledson, Hants County, N.S., Sonia (Trevor) Reid, Dartmouth, Curt (Denise) Reashore, Barrington Passage; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; many cherished nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Maxwell; brothers, Elmer Capstick, Cecil (Tina) Capstick, Everette (Margaret) Capstick; sister, Ulden (John) MacMullin; half-brothers, Harry Hosking, Charles Hosking; half-sisters, Florence MacInnis, Angeline MacIntyre and Josetta Jardine.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2010, in St. Joseph's Church, Bras d'Or, Fr. Peter MacLeod will officiate, interment in parish cemetery.
