Peacefully, at home on Saturday, January 15, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, aged 85. Predeceased by his parents, Robert Simpson and Sarah (Ferguson) and his sisters, Katherine, Marjorie (Bill Chiasson), Marguerite and Moira (Angus McCormack). Dearly beloved husband of Margaret (MacDonald) and dear father of Robert (Margaret Thorp), Kathy (John Nolan), Ian, Gordon, Nancy (Matt Holland), Peter (Katy MacLennan) and Hugh (Shannon Sullivan). Wonderful grandfather to Rob and Margaret's Katherine, Angus and Frances; Kathy and John's Rosemary and Harry; Nancy and Matt's Alex, Madeline and Abby; Peter and Katy's Maggie and Ross; and Hugh and Shannon's Sydney. Will also be missed by many friends, nieces and nephews. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on July 2, 1925, Robert graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1946 and Dalhousie Law School in 1948. He practiced law with his father until 1958 and served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1958 to 1962, at which time he was appointed Chairman of the Restrictive Trade Practices Commission. He served on the commission and practiced law in Ottawa until his retirement in 1981. He loved his retirement years, he loved Margaret and the family, the cottage, long walks, golf, history, politics and telling stories. Special thanks to Dr. Louise Coulombe and her team. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 18th at Annunciation of Our Lord Parish Church, 2414 Ogilvie Road, Gloucester. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Red Cross or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
