AVONDALE - Alexander Grant Ross, 88, Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, formerly of Avondale, passed away, Friday, February 4, 2011 in the Home.
Born in Thorburn, he was the only son of Collingwood Grant and Mary (Sim) Ross.
He was a member of Barney's River Presbyterian Church, Kenzieville. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and the 21st British Army Group during the Second World War. Upon return from overseas, he was employed in farming, logging, trucking and Christmas tree exporting.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Gertrude (Mason); daughters: Beth MacDonald, Adele MacLeod, Lois (Kevin) Thompson, all of Avondale; Vera Ross, Toronto; son, Robert (Wendy), Barney's River Station; sister, Amelia Fraser, Sutherland's River; Nova Bannerman, Barney's River Station; Margaret "Peggy" (Elmer) Williams, Barney's River Station; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughter Mary Lee Mason; sister, Vera Stewart.
There will be a family visitation Sunday in P & K Mac Donald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from 11- 12 p.m. A private family service to follow in Hattie's Cemetery, Avondale, with granddaughter, LCdr. Bonnie Mason officiating.
Donations may be made in Grant's memory to Hattie's Cemetery or to a charity of choice.
