Shirley Stollery passed away on February 3, 2011 with her family by her side.

Shirley was a proud and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend Bob on March 14, 2007.

She is survived by Carol and Bill Sharun, Janet and Spence Bryson, Doug Stollery and Scott Graham; her grandchildren Kate and Aubrey Zalaski, Jeff Bryson and Tanis Mosentine, Jon and Priscilla Sharun, and Chad and Meagan Bryson.

Shirley felt truly blessed with the arrival of her beautiful great-grandchildren Jasper Bryson (2) and Michael (3), and Meagan Zalaski (7 months). What joy they gave her! She is also survived by her sister, Bette and brother-in-law Hank Motton, her sister-in-law Gladys Hopper, her brother and sister-in-law Bill and Rhyl Stollery and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family particularly would like to thank Tom Hopper, Colleen deJager and Dayna Wittal for their many kindnesses to their Auntie Shirley.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents Ethel and Bill Hopper, her brothers Bill, Allan and David Hopper and infant sister Dorothy Hopper.

Shirley was born in Montreal, attended school in Toronto and later worked for the Toronto Star. She met Bob in Toronto while he was on leave from the Navy in 1943. They were married in Edmonton in 1947, and she was the breadwinner while Bob attended university after the war. Shirley and Bob worked together throughout their marriage of 60 years to enrich the community in which they lived. They were active partners in many charitable ventures, including the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Shirley was the quintessential mother and friend. A wonderful woman with a beautiful spirit, she showed warmth, care and compassion to all she met. She will be dearly missed.

Shirley lived through her health challenges with dignity and cheerfulness. The family expresses their heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care she received in her last days at the palliative care unit at the Grey Nun's Hospital in Edmonton. The family is also eternally grateful to her caregivers and devoted friends for their dedicated and loving care to Shirley, including Selma Sommert, Liz Collins, Terri Buttrey, Myrna Sirett, Teresa King and her caregivers from Revera and Bayshore.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Robertson-Wesley United Church, 10209-123 Street, Edmonton, AB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation, 8215-112 Street, Edmonton, AB., T6G 2C8, or the charity of one's choice.
