GATES, Marguerite Genevieve “Girlie” - 95, formerly of Port Williams, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in Annandale Rest Home, Wolfville. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late William and Eileen (Stillwell) Sharpe. She attended pre-school at a convent in Boston, where her family lived for one year while her mother was receiving cancer treatment only offered in the Boston area. Due to the progression of the cancer, her family returned to Nova Scotia so her mother could live out her final days at home. After settling in the Kentville area, Marguerite attended Kentville School and later received her degree in education. At the age of 45 she began teaching English for 20 years to grade six and eight students at Kentville School. Her teaching years were some of the happiest of her life and she had earned a great deal of respect from her students. She is survived by a son, Dr. Eugene Gates, Toronto; a sister, Kathleen Hall, New Brunswick; a half-sister, Lynn Baldwin, Avonport. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd; a brother George Sharpe; a half-brother, Glenn Sharpe. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There was no visitation, by request. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
