Russell MacKinnon, 33, of South Street, Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Michael and Lydia (Rogers) MacKinnon.
Russ graduated from MacDonald High in 1996, as well as the Cape Breton Business College and the Nova Scotia Community College. He was an electrician by trade. Russ loved computers and music. He played the trumpet in the Glace Bay School Band and took piano lessons in his younger years. Russ also enjoyed fishing and was an avid fan of the Washington Capitals hockey team.
But mostly, he will be remembered for his big smile and the sparkle in his eye.
Besides his parents, Russ is survived by his sister, Michelle (Mike Briggs), Glace Bay; grandmother, Margaret Rogers, Glace Bay; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by grandparents, Michael and Mary MacKinnon and Russell Rogers.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee is Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
All are invited to join the family for a reception in the church hall, directly below the church. Cremation to follow with interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy for Russ, memorial donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
