With saddened hearts we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, Tom, age 93, passed away peacefully at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, on Thursday, May 25, 2017.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Cummings) O’Brien and was a longtime member of the former St. John’s Church and more recently St. Anne’s Church, both in Glace Bay
Tom was a coal miner with Devco and retired from #26 Colliery after 43 years of service. He was a true outdoorsman, enjoying all of his times hunting and fishing; even when he came home empty-handed. He also enjoyed the times he spent gardening and bowling with the Devco Colliery League. Tom was a very easy going and fun loving man who truly loved his family.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Laurentia (MacNeil); daughter, Rose (Dan) Murrin, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Danielle (Henry) Glace Bay and Dana (Marie) Sydney.; great-grandchildren, Garrett, Jordan, Keagan, Daniel and great-great-grandchild, Aria: He will also be sadly missed by three siblings, Alphonse, Glace Bay and Jack and Ellen, both of Ont.; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Michael and sisters, Loretta, Annie-Mae and Marie.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
A Funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Leo Boone, will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church, Friday, June 02 at 1 p.m. Following the Mass, all are invited to join with Tom’s family at a reception in the church foyer.
Interment will be in St. John’s Parish Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. At this time we would like to sincerely thank the staff of Wentworth Court, Harbourstone Enhanced Care for their compassionate care, concern and for taking such great care of him.
