POTHIER, Gerald J. – age 96, Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 28, 2017 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital with his family by his side. Born September 23, 1920 in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late John Dennis and Rosie Esther (Muise) Pothier. Gerald loved the sea and spent many years working as a lobster and scallop fisherman. He also worked as a carpenter. He was a veteran of the second World War, having served overseas. He was a life-member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 155 Wedgeport and an active participant in the poppy campaign. Gerald was a proud father. His family was the most important thing in the world to him. He had a special place in his heart for his grand/great-grandchildren. In his spare time, Gerald loved planting flowers, gardening and playing cards. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Loretta V. (Warner) Pothier, as well as their children, Marie (Ludger) Boudreau, Vernon (Linda) Pothier, Kenneth (Valerie) Pothier, all of Wedgeport; Marilyn (Russell) LeBlanc, Morris Island; Cecile (Scott) Crowell, Argyle; Wayne (Lorna) Pothier, Wedgeport; grandchildren, Ashley, Melanie, Jimmy, Mathieu, Natasha, Holly, Crystal, Ryan, Christopher, Steven, Kelly, Sarah and Lacey; great grandchildren, Dominique, Jesse, Alyssa, Brooke and Logan. Also surviving are siblings, Ethel Blackett, Lawrence (Nora) Pothier and Catherine Emilson, all of Ontario. Aside from his parents, Gerald was predeceased by a sister Norma in infancy, as well as by brothers, Leo, Lellis, Norbert and Raymond. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:30, followed by prayers at 8:15, all at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 1, at Saint Michael’s Church, Wedgeport, Father Albeni d’Entremont officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. It has been requested that there be family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Gilles Boudreau and Friends Cancer Help Fund or to Saint Michael’s Church or Cemetery funds.
