BOWER, Winnifred Frances Elsie – Age 97, of Shelburne, passed away on June 9th, 2017 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Gunning Cove, Shelburne County, she was a daughter of the late John and Maretta (Mikinney) Doane. Winnifred and her husband Danny owned Bower’s Shoe Store in Shelburne. She was the youngest of seven children. Everyone called her Babe or Aunt Babe. She came from a musical family and her father made and played the fiddle, as well as her brothers played the banjo, fiddle and guitar. The girls also loved to sing. Winnifred loved to dance when she was younger. Her brother Vernon and Winnifred practiced dancing so much that they wore a hole in the floor. She worked hard in the shoe store most of her young life. She also looked after her husband, associates and friends that he would bring home for supper. Winnifred was also involved in many social groups in Shelburne. Winnifred is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, as well as close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Danny Bower; siblings, Maxwell, Ben, Vernon, Alenia, Ava, and Doris. Funeral arrangements were under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. By the request of the family there was no visitation.
