Barbara Joan Spurr, age 77, of Wolfville, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, after a brief illness. Born on January 21, 1940, in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Barb was the daughter of the late Clifford and Anne (Peyton) Jewer. Barbara is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bill (Wolfville); sons, Bill (Kathy), Halifax and Steven, Jordan River, BC; daughter, Jacqui (Randy) Devine, Comox, BC; and was a much loved “Baba” to Isabelle Comeau, B.J. Spurr, Samantha Devine, Ruby Spurr and Rainen Spurr. Also survived by sisters, Diane (John) Hanratty, Stephenville, NF; Joanne (Alec) Nicholson, Devon, Alta. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by brother, Ron Jewer. After St. Stephen's high school in Stephenville, NF, Barbara graduated from the Victoria General School of Nursing in 1961. The bulk of her professional career was spent as a Registered Nurse at Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, where she was known for her measured response to the periodic visits made to the ER by her sons and their friends with various sports and tomfoolery-related bumps and scrapes. Barbara was a member of Windsor United Church, and the Windsor Gyrettes. She was a devoted gardener, planting new flowers every time her husband broached the subject of selling their house. She had a wide circle of friends, especially the "bridge ladies," who convened regularly for decades to play cards, talk about each other's children, plan group trips and have a drink. Or two. In retirement, Bill and Barbara spent several winters in Florida and also took an RV trip across North America. Special thanks to the health care team at the ICU at Valley Regional, in particular nurses Michel Desmoreau and Victoria Murray and Dr. Rob Doyle. Visitation was held 6-8 pm Tuesday, June 20, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, in the Windsor United Church, 613 King St., Windsor, with Rev. Karen Lynch officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Barbara may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice. To place a donation card, please call Lindsay’s at 902-798-2232.
