Arthur Edwin Burgess, a distinguished researcher and scientist in the field of medical imaging and visual perception, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. on Sunday, June 18, 2017.

Arthur was predeceased by his parents, Art and Margaret Burgess and is lovingly remembered by his greatest joy in life, daughter Sarah Burgess (Warren) of Vancouver, his brother Reagh (Jackie) Burgess of Calgary, loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Born in Hartsville, Prince Edward Island in 1940, Arthur graduated from Queen Elizabeth School in Shilo, Manitoba and went on to graduate from Royal Military College in 1962. He received his Masters from Queen’s University and his PhD at the University of British Colombia.

He began his career at UBC and subsequently spent 10 years at Harvard Medical School (Brigham and Women’s Hospital) in Boston, Massachusetts where he carried on his lifetime commitment to research in the Department of Radiology as Associate Professor. Arthur seized every opportunity to further medical research and extensively shared his findings. His contribution to human health was research supporting the creation, modification, analysis and design optimization of medical imaging equipment.

Arthur was a kind, generous and honourable person who always enjoyed life to the fullest. He had a passion for traveling, especially his yearly trips to PEI; Royal Military College reunions, meeting friends, reading, fly fishing and sports.

To honour Arthur’s request, his body has been donated to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Colombia as his final contribution to furthering medical research.

Special thanks to the Palliative Care team at St. Paul’s for their compassion and care during Arthur’s time at St. Paul’s Hospital.

A celebration of Arthur’s life will be held at the Hartsville Church on Prince Edward Island at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 7th, 2017.
