Leona Mae MacLeod-Haywood passed peacefully in the loving arms of her two daughters, Evelyn and Dianne, in Parry Sound Palliative Care on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 4:00 am. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Ernel and Mabel Loretta (Harvey) Spence.
Leona grew up in the small mining town of Springhill, N.S. and moved to Don Mills, Ontario with her husband, Jack, and children after the mines closed down. Leona and Jack, after 17 years, moved back “home” to enjoy their cottage (where they vacationed every year) at Heather’s Beach. After Jack’s death, Leona moved to Toronto and Waterloo, Ontario but moved back to Springhill, N.S. where she married Ray and they relocated to Summerside, P.E.I. After Ray’s death, Leona moved to Newmarket, Ontario to join her daughters. In her last days, she was spending time at Evie’s cottage doing what she loved, gardening and enjoying nature…”Our little worker bee”. Mom’s philosophy: “Always have a dream; be positive”
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Evelyn Mae Rawlinson (Don) and Dianne Loretta MacLeod; grandson, Garry Donald Rawlinson (Edie) and great grandchildren, Emma Marie Rawlinson and Chritopher Nathan Rawlinson; brother, Wayne (Donna) Spence and Lavona Demings (Alan); several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband John "Jack" Kenneth MacLeod and by her second husband James "Ray" Haywood; brother, Ernel Herbert Spence.Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) where visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 from 1:00 pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 2:00 pm with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Burials in Leamington Cemetery and North Street Roman Catholic Cemetery, Springhill.
If so desired, donations in Leona's memory may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Diabetes Association.
