Marion Evelyn (Durkee) Mabey

Mabey, Marion Evelyn (Durkee) – 91, passed away peacefully, June 16, 2017 in Willow Lodge Home for Special Care, Tatamagouche, N.S. Born December 18, 1925 in Brockton, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Lester and Martha (Harley) Durkee. Marion was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. During her life, she was a Cub Scout leader, driver education instructor and one of the earliest licensed hairdressers in the province. Her passion for almost fifty years was a weekly 45’s get together with her best friends. Some who lived close by would come by for a coffee and a chat at 10 and 3 daily – sometimes on her back deck under her weeping willows while they enjoyed bird watching and the playful squirrels. Marion also belonged to a seniors bowling league for many years which made for considerable playful banter with her friends. As the Mabey family grew, they spread out over Ontario, New Brunswick and Georgie, USA, thus family get togethers were cherished by her. Marion is survived by her daughters, Mary, Georgia, USA; Nettie, N.B.; Sheila, Ont.; sons, William, Truro; Fenwick, N.B.; James, Truro; brothers, Bill (Lorraine); Harley and Arthur; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; she was predeceased by her husband, Ernest; sisters, Annie, Eileen and Mary; daughter, Nancy; son, Harley. No funeral service at her request. Her remains have been donated to Dalhousie University for medical research and education. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, 1-A1 Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building P.O. Box 15000 Halifax, N.S. B3H 4R2. The Mabey family wished to gratefully thank the staff of Willow Lodge for their compassionate care. To Dr. Harold Burghuis for his many years of skilled attention to Marion’s shifting health needs. To the VON for their daily visits and assistance, Isabel Pope, Continuing Care Coordinator and Ashley MacCallum for her friendship and care of Marion.
