It is with profound sadness but with much love in our hearts that we announce the passing of Kenneth Raymond Horsman at the age of 69. Ken’s seven year journey with ALS ended on July 3, 2017 surrounded by all of his family. Throughout this very challenging time in our lives Ken remained the kind, gentle man he always was. He never lost his sense of humor and although his body failed him his mind remained as bright as ever. He was a wonderful man who lived a wonderful life. His love for his family was unending and unconditional. He was predeceased by his parent’s Ronald and Edith Horsman of Fort Qu’Appelle. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Dr. Helen Horsman (nee Lavender), one son Timothy Horsman and his wife Dr. Ave Dersch, (Slave Lake, Alberta), one daughter Katherine King and her husband Scott, (Buffalo Pound Lake), and three beautiful grandchildren, Cole and Julianna King and August Horsman. He is also survived by his siblings, Marj and Ken Hutchinson (Pasqua Lake), Don and Carol Horsman (Fort Qu’Appelle), Julie and Larry Bedel (Pasqua Lake), by Helen’s Lavender siblings – Leonard and Ellen, Margaret, Tom and Joan, and John and Wendy and 19 nieces and nephews. Ken was a well-known educational leader and public servant in the province. In 1993 he was appointed Assistant and then Associate Deputy Minister of Education. He worked nationally and internationally on several education related projects. In 2003 he retired from public service and formed his own company HK Enterprises. For ten years Ken did contract work for The Office of the Treaty Commissioner where he worked with a group of colleagues to help write and implement Treaties in the Classroom for all Saskatchewan Schools. He also worked with the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba as a special advisor and with the Human Rights Commission of Saskatchewan to help create the foundational materials for Citizenship Education. He served nine years as the Chair of the Board for The Public Employees’ Pension Board for Saskatchewan. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation Board for three years. Our sincere gratitude to the medical system in our province. Ken received excellent care and support from the Saskatoon Health Region, from home care services and from the ALS Society. A special thank you to Rhonda who was Ken’s main caregiver for two years. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at The Cathedral of The Holy Family, 123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday July 7, 2017. The celebrant will be the Very Rev. Fr. David Tumback. Please wear your colorful summer clothes. Ken loved color!! Lunch and further celebration of Ken’s life will take place at St. Joseph School (next door to the Cathedral) immediately following the mass. Everyone is invited to attend. The Rite of Committal will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery for family members.
