Antonius “Tony” Rommens
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father and Opa, Antonius “Tony” Rommens, 87, of Riverview and formerly of Melrose, NB on Saturday, July 1, 2017. Born in Wouw, Holland, Tony was a son of the late Cornelis and Anna Maria (Dekkers) Rommens.
Tony was a respected dairy farmer, having immigrated to Canada in 1956 and established the Roga Farm in Melrose in 1959 with his wife, Mien. He was proud of his registered purebred Holsteins and was a member of Holstein Canada, as well as the NB Milk Producers and Chignecto Soil and Crop Associations. He was also a long time member of the St. Bartholomew’s Roman Catholic Church, Melrose.
Tony had a warm smile for everyone and was a dedicated family man with deep love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a proud Canadian. He was an expert with hand tools and a terrific problem solver with ability to fix anything. His favourite advice was “put the can’t away, and do it.”
Tony will be missed by his children, Con (Rose) Rommens, Melrose, Johanna Rommens, Toronto, Mary (Bob) Sanderson, Riverview, Annette (David) Burridge, Fort St. John, BC, Anthony Rommens, Oakville, and Melissa (Adrian) Desbarats, Emyvale, PE; and; eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; his siblings Jo, Geert, Jan, and Frans; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of over sixty years, Adriana “Mien” (van Gaans); his siblings, Willem, Kees, Cor, Marie, Janus, Piet, and Sjef.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jones Funeral Home. Visiting hours will take place at the Port Elgin location, 3 West Main Street, (506-538-2241) from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. A funeral mass will take place at St. Bartholomew’s Roman Catholic Church, Melrose, on Thursday at 1 pm with burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Tony may be made to the St. Bartholomew’s Church Cemetery. Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Tony’s online memorial at www.jonesfuneralhome.ca or through the Jones Funeral Home Facebook Page.
