New Glasgow – Dianne Grant, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017.
It is amazing the community you can build over a pot of spaghetti sauce. We are fully understanding the lives that Mum has touched throughout the years by offering a belly full of good food and an ear that would be patient enough to listen when we were able to formulate our thoughts. From cadet, pipe band, spaghetti suppers at the New Glasgow Armouries, stacks of pancakes on Sunday mornings, and Monday night drop-in suppers before fight practice at the Halifax MFRC, Mum understood how many kids fell outside the mainstream, and if she could help them find a community that they would turn out ok. Our friends were always welcome and felt comfortable in our home.
Kathleen Dianne Grant fought cancer until the very end. She had so much that she wanted to do in this life, and up until very recently was able to accomplish a lot of her dreams. She retired from the Nova Scotia government as a policy analyst for municipal affairs in 2009. Dianne was a life-long learner, proud of her Dean's list standing in her undergraduate degree in Celtic studies from St. F. X. university, and her graduate studies in municipal, public service and information studies. She decided to return to school at retirement, taking courses towards another bachelor’s degree, this time in Fine Arts at NSCAD university concentrating in jewelry and metal smithing.
Dianne was the youngest daughter of the late Donald Augustine Grant and Frances Patricia Keough. She was predeceased by younger twin brothers, James and John, in infancy. She was also predeceased by the love of her life, partner Robert Mackie of New Glasgow.
She leaves behind sister, Patricia Scherner (Wolfgang, deceased); and brother Brian Grant (Marilyn); children, Kelly (Pierre) and Dane (Nancy), grandchildren, Eoghan, Sacha (Wade), and Stephan, great grandchildren, Torren, Audree, and Madison; nieces and nephews. She will be missed by so many more.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass 11 am Friday in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow, with Father Tom MacNeil officiating.
Donations in her memory may be made to McGill Health Science Centre (Cedar Cancer Clinic) or the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
