Myrtle POCHA
November 23, 1929 – July 7, 2017
Born on the farm at Steep Creek, November 23, 1929. Myrtle loved the farm life, but chose a career in nursing, as encouraged by Grampa Joe and Grandma Mary. Grampa Joe saved up enough in their humble lifestyle to send her to Nursing School. Myrtle was a dedicated caregiver and was a working fulltime mom raising 4 scrapping boys while also helping to run their mixed farm. She had large garden, the ever presence of homemade buns and bannock, cooking together with family to make mountains of perogies, canned local berries and venison and elk. Her sons grew up in a busy working household. Myrtle was the Floor Manager on surgical floor at the Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert, and told us stories of how she would oversee up to 35 patients in a given shift. She often worked double shifts to fill in for nurses that didn’t show up due to bad weather, yet she herself had to drive 20 km into the city. A favourite surprise for her sons was leaving chicklets under their pillows during the night when she returned from night shifts. Myrtle trained hundreds of nurses in her time on Surgical Floor and dedicated 35 years of her career to the Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert. She wore out her knees and hips walking those floors, getting full replacements that kept her going! Unfortunately, a severe hip dislocation left her in a body cast for weeks, which then started her decline in health. She was happiest on her farm enjoying the peace of nature from the view of her deck. She especially looked forward to calling everyone on their birthdays, and enjoyed their return calls. When she was no longer able to drive, being housebound, she loved going for drives with Doug where the two of them would solve the world’s problems together. She loved to spend holidays enjoying her grandchildren, she always had her camera handy and loved to take pictures. She looked forward to our many family gatherings, (especially the family meals!), weddings, birthdays, and all the seasons' celebrations! Many thanks to Birch Hills Care Home for their loving care and attention in the last 3 years of life that gave her so much joy; and to the caregivers, doctors and nurses on 5th and 6th floors at the Victoria Hospital for her final care. Myrtle is lovingly remembered by her son; Gordon and his children Courtney Lundeen(Kyle) and their children Emmett and Amelia; Tiffany Pocha and her son Ryker; and Paige Pocha; her son Don Pocha (Sheila)and their children Austin and Brittney; her son Douglas Pocha (Barbara) and their children Renai and her children Grace, Anna and Sebastian; Michelle Atkinson (Curtis) and their children Sophie, Olivia, and Georgia; Melanie McBride (Todd) and their children Alice and Marie; Janelle La Valley (Quinn) and their children Aden and Madelyn; her brother Gordon Grassick (Kathy) and their children Michael (Pam);Brad (Karen); Arlene(Mike Dobrohoczki) Audrey (Darcy Deck) as well as many nieces and nephews. Myrtle was predeceased by her son Lawrence; daughter Barb Colby; the father of her boys, Ron Pocha; her parents Joe and Mary Grassick. A PRAYER SERVICE and VIEWING will be held 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 11th at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert. A Private Family Interment will be held in Steep Creek, SK at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
