William Patrick "Bill" Whiffen

Born: March 14th, 1938

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, William "Bill" Whiffen, at the palliative care unit of Colchester Hospital after a battle with brain cancer, which he faced with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. Born in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland on March 14, 1938, he was the son of the late John "Jack" and Johanna (Slaney) Whiffen. He started his career in forestry and switched to education, teaching biology at Brother Rice High School in St. John's for 20 years where he was affectionately known as "Bio Bill". After retiring, Bill made Truro his home for 21 years. He had a great love of music which was evident every time he sang with the church choir or played his clarinet as he proudly marched with the Truro Concert Band. His kind heart and generous soul were evident to those lives he touched. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and wanted nothing more than to put a smile on everyone's face. He is survived by the love of his life for 53 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (Mercer) Whiffen, son Stephen (Reiko), daughters Andrea (Charles) King and Kristina (Robert Molloy) Whiffen, grandson Christopher, granddaughter Naomi and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Don Rowe, Dr. Cortney Smith and all the staff at the Palliative Care Unit for their care, compassion and love. At Bill's request there will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince St., Truro at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 20 with a reception to follow in Campbell Hall. In honour of Bill's love of colour, colours may be worn. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation or the charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be made at www.ColchesterCommunity.com

"He will be deeply missed."
