Thomas ‘Tom’ Read

Passed on: July 18th, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Read, age 75, Moncton, on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 after a brave battle against cancer. Tom was born to Tom and Donna Read, Prince Street, Sydney who have predeceased him.
Growing up in Sydney, he attended Constantine School, Sydney Academy, and Xavier Junior College. He attended the Coady International Institute and graduated with a degree from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Ottawa where he began a lifelong career with the Co-Operators, working in Regina, Moncton, and Glace Bay until his retirement. His first job at age 14 was at Sydney Co-Op, cutting meat and his fingers.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne; four step-daughters, Jill MacDonald, Heather Maxwell, Martha Maxwell (Adam) and Bridget Maxwell, and six grandchildren, Kate, Hannah, Ryan, Ella, Grace and Josie. He is also survived by son, Shawn Read (Zoe) and his children, Oliver and Joshua, as well as daughter, Andrea Mann (Blair) and children, Ellie and Avery.
Born into a large family, Tom is survived by sisters, Sheila Coleman (Jack), Paula Gardner, Rhonda Smith (Barry) of Sydney and Debbie MacArthur (Allan) of Edmonton. His brothers are, Darrell (Barbara), Sydney, Bill (Karen), Saskatoon and Charles (Helen), Fredericton.
Throughout his life, Tom was keenly interested in coaching hockey and volunteering with United Way and The Friends of the Moncton Hospital. He loved gardening, skiing and music. Known for his wry sense of humor, Tom would tell anyone who would listen that “he watered his lawn with beer so it would come up half cut”.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd., Moncton (506-858-1995) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, Botsford Street, Moncton on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. Father Carroll will officiate with a reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation are suggested.
Tom’s family thanks all relatives and friends who have offered prayers and deeds to help though this difficult time. Special thanks for the care provided by Dr. Ali Benjelloun, the Extra-Mural Driscoll palliative care team, especially Dr. Melanie Leger and nurses Shona and Linda.
