SURETTE, Vincent Joseph – age 95, Melbourne, passed away on July 20, 2017 at Veteran’s Place in Yarmouth. Born in Pinkney’s Point on November 15, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles and Eva (Melanson) Surette. During the second World War he served overseas, transporting troops and supplies. He was a 60 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61 Yarmouth. A pipefitter by trade, he worked on various construction sites in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario. After an early retirement, he enjoyed hunting, gardening, doing yard work, playing Whist at the community hall, listening to country and bluegrass music, watching the Blue Jays and attending family gatherings. He took pride in his vehicles – always a Ford man. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Frances (Muise); sons, Raymond (Betty) Muise, Melbourne and David (Edgar), Vancouver; daughters, Joan, Melbourne; Irene McCormick, Halifax; Ruth (Larry) Fitzgerald, Comeau’s Hill; Rita (Vernon) Clairmont, Arcadia; grandchildren, Mark (Tish) Muise, Terry (Lisa) Muise, Randy Muise, Mary (Paul) Bottomley, Anna McCormick, Patrick (Thea) McCormick, Jeff Fitzgerald, Travis (Jodie) Fitzgerald, Trevor (Erica) Fitzgerald, Michael Clairmont, Jason (Ashlee) Clairmont and nine great grandchildren. Vince was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his foster parents, Eugene and Elizabeth Boudreau and several foster-siblings; brothers, Eugene, Gerald and Benjamin; sisters, Irene, Gertrude and Pearl Madden; son-in-law, Shaun McCormick. Thank you to those who cared for him the last few years: VON, the “girls” from Treasured Memories, Todd Lacey at Southwest Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, the dedicated staff of Veteran’s Place and Dr. Winston Wertlen. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:30, followed by prayers at 8:00, all at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St. Yarmouth. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 24 from Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Melbourne, Father Henry Smolenaars officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61 Yarmouth, Veteran’s Place or to a charity of your choice.
