Hector died peacefully on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, surrounded by family.
Born April 7, 1919 in St. Ninian, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Angus and Mary (MacDonald) Mac Isaac.
Loving father to Blaise, Sydney, Catherine Ross (Tom), London, Ontario, Anne Marie Beasley (George), New Liscard, Ontario, Daniel, Antigonish and Joan MacDonald (Brian), Port Hawkesbury. Also survived by his grandchildren, Ginette and Mark MacIsaac, Tommy and Patrick Ross, Caleb, Joshua, and Daniel Beasley, Craig, David and Andrew MacDonald; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kay Rankin, New Waterford and many nieces and nephews.
Hector was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Sarah Margaret (Sadie) Rankin; brothers, Willie A. (Mina), Robert (Mae/Florence) and sisters, Catherine (Alex Austin) Beaton, Isabel (Angus W.) MacDonald, Anna (Dan R.) MacDonald, Annie Mae (Duncan) MacEachern, Marie (William) MacDonald and Martha (Leo) DeWolf.
After serving overseas during World War II, Hector married his wife Sadie and started their family in Port Hawkesbury. He was employed by Canada Customs and retired in 1983 after 28 years of service. Hector was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, KOC Cape Nova Council 7924, and the Port Hawkesbury Evergreen Seniors Club.
Hector loved visitors, meeting new people, violin music, playing cards and an occasional “dileag”. His love of violin music dates back to his early years and continued throughout his life. His home was always open to violin players and those that loved Celtic music. Hector’s first language was Gaelic, and through the years supported efforts to maintain the language and its rich Celtic culture.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and residents of the RK MacDonald Nursing home for all their kindness, compassion and care shown to Hector during his stay.
Visitation will be held Sunday 7-9 p.m. with a legion service at 7 p.m. and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a vigil service at 2 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations in memory of Hector may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or Canadian Cancer Society.
