Doug Craig

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas “Doug” Walter Craig, of River John.
Doug was born on January 7th, 1945, he was the son of Sadie and the late Donald Craig of River John.
Doug led a diverse and interesting life. He grew up in River John and attended local schools. Doug was a commercial fisherman for nearly his entire life, except for a few brief periods where he worked in Halifax, Michelin Tire, River John Co-op, and in construction. Doug’s passion for fishing began at an early age on his father’s boat and continued for the remainder of his working career, and well after, including on his son, Jamie’s boat.
Doug had 42 years of service with Helping Hand Lodge # 34, River John. He was a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, and he was one of the charter members of the River John Lion’s Club. Doug was also a member of the Auxiliary Coast Guard for over 35 years, and a very active member of the Harbour Authority of Skinner’s Cove. He was also a devoted member of Salem United Church.
Doug had many interests during his life. As a devoted father and grandfather, he attended many hockey and softball games with his children and continued to eagerly attend his grandchildren’s sporting events. Doug was also a devoted Leaf’s fan and hockey enthusiast. He enjoyed many passionate conversations on any topic with family and friends. He had a great interest in tractors and restored a 1950 Ferguson. Most recently, Doug found joy in gardening, creating his own standing vegetable plot, which he tended with care. Above all, Doug’s greatest passion and joy in life was his family.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of nearly 52 years, Betty (MacLellan); his daughter, Karen (John); son Jamie (Liz); and Billy (Lisa). Doug was a devoted grandfather to Matthew (Kyla) and Katie; Jessie, Janie and Jean; and Sadie; and great-grandfather to Avery and Adalynn.
