Edna J. Lavandier, 96, passed away peacefully with family and friends by her side, on August 3, 2017 at Wuesthoff Medical Center in Melbourne. Edna, an only child, was born in New York City. Following her mother’s death, she was raised by her grandmother. She married Amos Lavandier. In the early years of their marriage, Edna and Amos resided in Thornwood, Westchester County, New York, and then in 1977 relocated to Melbourne Beach. Edna had a brilliant mind, especially for numbers. At 21 years of age, Edna completed her Master’s Degree in Engineering, majoring in physics and mathematics. Following her studies, she was employed as a researcher with RCA in New Jersey for several years. In the late 1940s, she joined Union Carbide and eventually became head of their Corporate Information Center in New York, responding to information requests worldwide regarding Union Carbide and its products. Following Amos’s death in 1999, Edna volunteered for almost 40,000 hours with the hospital auxiliary of Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. She served as a waiting rooms coordinator, treasurer and vice-president of the auxiliary and received the 2014 Space Coast Humanitarian Award. Edna also loved her beachfront condominium and served in various capacities, including board member, treasurer, secretary, and president with the South Shores Oceanside Condominium Association. She enjoyed Turner Classic movies, game shows, and was an avid sports fan; especially football and her Dallas Cowboys. Edna was a great listener, had a warm smile for everyone, and was a wonderful friend, neighbor, and mentor. She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and co-volunteers. No visiting by request.
