Len Bastien

Passed on: August 12th, 2017

It is with great sadness that in the early hours of August 12th, 2017 Leonard Mervin Bastien (“Len/Lenny”) passed away peacefully, with his daughter Melissa at his side. He passed on after a courageous battle with cancer which he faced fearlessly with the support, caregiving and love of his wife Brenda by his side. Len was an amazing spouse, father, papa, brother, uncle and friend. His cheerful disposition, positive attitude, caring heart and joyous smile will forever warm our hearts and put a smile upon our face. Len will forever be lovingly remembered by his wife, Brenda and their daughter Melissa and his other children: Jeff (Sharon), Cathy (Bruce), Mark, Dan (Dawn) and Beverly (Carle). Len will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren; Chad, Ali, Carly, Matthew, Brittany and Cassidy. His sisters, Sheila, Beulah and Joyce (Fred) and his brother Eddie. As well as his great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his children Clint, Cindy and Bradley; granddaughter April; and siblings Oliver, Ernest, Linda, Gloria and Anna. Len was born on the farm just south of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on October 16, 1935 to Edward and Olive Bastien. Born into a family of 10 children, he went on to have 9 of his own. He was a strong, hardworking man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Len spent most of his life working with his hands. Owning and operating his own landscaping company for many years, He loved to build those infamous “Lenny” benches, which are a treasure to all who are lucky enough to own one. It was his creative mind that set him apart from even the most brilliant of inventors. He didn’t see obstacles, he came up with solutions. Len’s ability to foresee a need then transition that into thought, then that thought into a reality was a truly remarkable gift. Definitely no blueprint required! Whether it be his “rock heat system”, his “garage lifter” or “bin moving trailer”. Len created whatever he needed from whatever he had around. Even through his recent illness he never lost his faith in God. He was comforted physically and emotionally by his family and spiritually by God. He knew what awaited him on the other side and that gave him great peace. He will be missed immensely by all who loved him. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved still missed and very dear.” A Memorial Service will be held at W. J. Jones Chapel (106 Athabasca St E, Moose Jaw, SK) at 1:00PM on Friday August 18th, 2017. Pastor John McCubbing will officiate. Interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (1910 McIntyre Street Regina, Saskatchewan S4P 2R3) or to Canadian Mental Health Association (650 Coteau Street West, Room 324 Moose Jaw, SK S6H 5E6). In living memory of Len a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
