James Thomas "Jim" Hodge

James Thomas "Jim" Hodge

In memory of James Thomas “Jim” Hodge, aged 81 years, who passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside. Jim is survived by his wife Daphne (Hutchings) Hodge; and his children Jamie and Tim. Born in Savage Cove, on Newfoundland’s North Shore, to James Thomas Hodge and Elizabeth Williams, he was the youngest of five children. At the death of his father, his mother took the five small children to the Sir Wilfred Grenfell Orphanage in St. Anthony where she later became the leader, and remained there until all 5 children graduated from high school. Jim then attended Mount Allison University and later Memorial University in St. John’s, where he and Daphne graduated with bachelor degrees in Arts and Education and then went on to build careers as school teachers. Jim and Daphne later moved to Summerside, where they taught school and raised their two children. The oldest, Jamie, lives in Ottawa, and Tim lives in Calgary with his wife Tanya and two children Matthew and Sarah. Jim taught at S.I.S., K.I.S.H. and T.O.S.H. He retired early due to ill health but continued his involvement in Trinity United Church, where he was a member of the choir. His solos, especially “Holy Night” were enjoyed by the congregation throughout the years. He will always be missed on Christmas Eve when people yearn to hear that voice again. He was a member of the YMCA for many years, where he especially loved the meals with friends. Jim also leaves to mourn, his brother Fred (Joan). He was predeceased by his two brothers Stanley and Clayton and his sister Cinderella. Visiting hours will be held at the Moase Funeral Home, Summerside, on Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Church, Summerside, on Wednesday, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Prince County Hospital Foundation. www.moase.ca
