James David Matthews died on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 in Sydney, NS.
Jim was born in North Sydney on December 1, 1962. He attended Memorial High School, and completed a Bachelor of Business Administration at St. FX in 1985.
He was a financial advisor, initially with London Life, and for the last 16 years independently with Justin McDonough and John Tompkins at Matthews McDonough.
Jim was an avid cyclist and runner. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his six sisters and many nieces and nephews. Jim had a true love of travel, and would always see the positive side of each place that he and Stephen visited. Even when it rained, it was a warm rain in a wonderful place.
He was predeceased by his mother, Jean (Jardine); father, George, and brother-in-law, Russell MacDonald.
Jim is survived by his partner of 31 years, Stephen Couban, and his sisters, Debbie Moore (Howie), Barbara MacDonald, Joanne Jardine (Sandy), Georgina MacLeod (Ian), Donna Matthews- Hicks (Bob) and Beth Harbin (Andy). Also left to mourn are his father and mother-in-law, John and Vivi Couban; sister-in-law, Stella Couban (Bruce); sister-in-law, Ginny Moore; aunts, Phyllis Walker (Billy), Joan Kell, Marion Andrews (Frankie) and Eleanor Pyke; uncle, Evie Jardine (Shirley), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Jim is also survived by many friends, family and colleagues in Cape Breton and Halifax and around the world.
He will be sorely missed by his and Stephen’s dear dog, Lily.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place on Monday, September 4, 2017, at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen St., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Stacey LeMoine officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to Hope Cottage in Halifax.
