
Alexander Young
Alex Young was born on January 9, 1933 in Stewiacke, N.S. he died suddenly on April 2, 2011 at his winter home in North Port, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Geraldine (Langillle), sons Sandy and Malcolm (Colleen), grandson Alexander, brothers Allister (Greta) and Paul, and was pre-deceased by his father Alexander, mother Elizabeth and siblings Glen, Lyle, Fred, Bessie and Fran.
Alex joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1950 and served with distinction for 35 years retiring with the rank of Colonel (Group Captain). Flying fighter jets was his second love in life with Geraldine always being his first. During his years of service Alex was a proud member of 416, 430 and 441 Squadrons holding the position of Commanding Officer in the later from 1971-1974. Alex's proudest service however was as a member of the RCAF aerobatic team in the Golden Hawks from 1963-65. Alex and Geraldine were the quintessential military couple living in Germany, England, Texas, Colorado Springs and throughout Canada.
After retirement from the Canadian Forces, Alex took on a second career working for CAE Electronics in the fight simulations division for five years. Alex and Geraldine fully retired in 1989 dividing their time between homes in Bible Hill and North Port, Florida. In retirement Alex and Geraldine pursued golf and bridge with the company of their many friends.
Alex was happiest with his family on the many vacations that they took throughout Europe. Later in life he loved visits from Sandy, Malcolm, Colleen and Grandson Alexander to either Bible Hill or North Port. A memorable moment for Alex was his and Geraldine's 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration in California with their family. Alex was a man of strong convictions and opinions that he freely shared both in conversation and numerous letters to the editor of the local newspaper. he derived great joy from this life with Geraldine, his card games with grandson Alexander, and nightly walks with his dogs Alfie and Oliver.
Dad may you always find that special place where the weather is "75 degrees, sunny and light breezes."
We love you and miss you but will never forget you.
A celebration of Alex's life will be held at the Truro Golf Club on Saturday May 7th, 2011 at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Donation in Alex's memory may be made to a charity of choice.
