GENEVIEVE KVINLAUG
1925 - 2017

The passing of Genevieve Kvinlaug (nee Alexander) occurred on Sunday, September 24, 2017. Genevieve was predeceased by her husband, Tommy; her parents, Fred and Genevieve Alexander; her four sisters, Eunice, Orpha, Iona and Lucille; her four brothers, Emil, Wilfred, Oscar, and Lawrence; and her niece, Genevieve. Mom was born on the farm in Rayside district on Wednesday, May 6, 1925, as the fourth of nine children. After high school, she went to work at the Small Arms factory in Toronto. When the factory closed she worked for Bell Telephone. She was a passenger guide with the Toronto Transportation Company when she was called back to Shellbrook to help her mom, who had been injured in an accident. With her dad's failing health she remained in Shellbrook, accepting a job at the Post Office. On April 15, 1953, Mom married Dad. Their home for the next ten years was in Leask. A family of 3 children followed: Murray in 1955, Shelley in 1958 and Heather in 1965. In 1965 the family moved to Prince Albert, where Mom was still residing in the family home at the time of her death. Left to mourn her passing is her son, Murray (Debbie Bittner) and his four daughters, Carmen (Trevor Langford) and their children, Conner and Gracie, Angela Kvinlaug, Kari Kvinlaug and Erin (Brad Broccolo) and their son, Brayden; her daughter, Shelley (Ken Bird) and their son, Cameron (Elise Labine) and daughters, Adria and Linley and son, Matthew (Theresa Boychuk) and their daughters, Jacey and Kaden; her daughter, Heather (Darrell Kowalski) and their daughter, Shalyn; and her sister-in-law, Sheila Alexander. Mom enjoyed good health and lived in her own home right up until the end. She was ill for a brief time just before her passing. Her favorite pastime was knitting and if you were ever the lucky recipient of a pair of her hand-made socks, you would understand the passion she had for that hobby. She loved to travel and loved to read. She was passionate about keeping a daily diary and had a memory as sharp as a tack. In later years she enjoyed many senior bus trips. One of her most enjoyable trips was one to Jamaica that she took with her lifelong friend, Treva Topping. She also enjoyed a trip to Alaska and several bus trips to the west coast with friends. In 2002, Mom and her daughter, Shelley took what she referred to as her trip of a lifetime to Ottawa for the 50th anniversary of the Tulip Festival. There they viewed the 1 million tulips that blanketed the city. It was a trip neither of them will forget. Mom was a caring and compassionate person who put her family first and foremost. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life. She loved to have the grandkids over for a meal and passed on some of her 'special' recipes to her family. She taught us to live for today, take time to smell the flowers, and travel, travel, travel. Mom, we love you, we miss you and we will never forget everything you did for us. Until we meet again…….goodnight, Mom! As per Mom's request, she will be cremated and a private graveside service will follow at a later date. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Funeral Home, Don Moriarty, Funeral Director.
