Anna Mae Buchanan

Passed on: October 13th, 2017

Anna Mae Buchanan, 102, died peacefully Friday, October 13, 2017, at Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck.
Born at Glen Tosh in 1914, she was the daughter of the late Murdock H. and Katie Ann (MacDonald) Matheson.
A lifelong resident of Glen Tosh/South Haven, Mae’s focus in life was her family, community, and church.
Mae was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and had a vast network of cherished friends. From the time she and Murdock were married in 1940, her primary focus became raising her family. She worked hard, always putting her family’s interests above her own. She was a talented knitter and seamstress, a skilled cook and baker, and could always be counted on for a cup of tea for her many visitors. She had a very green thumb and many pets both tame and wild.
She was a dedicated volunteer with many community groups, including the South Haven Community Hall, Hospital Auxiliary, Alderwood Auxiliary and Working Council, Clan Matheson Society, the Liberal Party, the Women’s Liberal Club, the Gaelic College, Home and School Association, and Harbourview Cemetery.
For more than 75 years, she was a member of Glen Valley United Church and contributed greatly of her time and talents to the church. She served various capacities in her church, including organist, choir member, U.C.W., Sunday School instructor, and Elder.
Mae is survived by sons, John (Theresa), South Haven and Merrill (Brenda), Baddeck; son-in-law, Neil MacDonald (Evelyn), Baddeck; grandchildren, Audrey (Bill Higgins), Westmount, Jake, Whycocomagh, Donald (Kristen) MacDonald, Calgary, Lisa, Dartmouth and Alana (Craig Evely), Porters Lake; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Daniel and Jack MacDonald, Calgary; nephew, Donald (Pamela) Morrison; nieces, Norma (Robert) Barradell, Elizabeth (Francis) Ryan and Mildred Morrison, and lifelong friend and cousin, Jessie Ross.
She was predeceased by her husband, Murdock; daughter, Kathryn; sister, Jessie E. (A.J.) Morrison, and brothers, Dan Neil (Sarah) and Allan.
Mae’s family would like to thank all the staff at Alderwood for their care and kindness, and for creating an environment where Mae was able to maintain her active social life throughout her six years as a resident.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home. A service will be held Sunday, October 22 at 2 p.m. at Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church with Dianne Kempt, DLM officiating. Reception to follow immediately at South Haven Community Hall. Burial will be in Harbourview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
