On October 17, 2017, a beautiful Fall day, our dear mother, Kathryn “Joyce” McGillivray ANDREW (nee Irvine), age 84, silently slipped away and is now joyously reunited with her husband of 64 years, George McCoubrey Andrew (deceased January 8, 2017). Joyce passed peacefully with her eldest daughter at her side, knowing how much she was loved. Predeceased by infant son Gordon (1956), she leaves behind daughters Susan (Mark Wood), Jane (Michael Fobert), Cindy (Charlie Robinson) and 8 grandchildren – Megan, Andrew, Elizabeth and Michael Nolan, Kate and Alec Fobert and Hope and Erin Robinson; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished sisters-in-law Doris Andrew Whalen and Nellie Andrew Ingelman (Ragnar). Thanks to Joyce, the younger generation all know what a winning hand of Crazy Eights looks like – and that a peppermint is the hard fought for prize. Although we, who are left behind, are sad, we do not mourn. We rejoice and celebrate Mum’s life. Now free from Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia that wracked her tiny body and stole her mind piece by piece, we celebrate that Mum and Dad have been reunited in a better place – most likely a Stanley Thompson designed golf course that offers bridge for the ladies and serves sandwiches without the crusts. That would be fitting for this couple, married 64 years – and in keeping with Mum’s ‘must have’ list. Joyce’s life work was ‘her girls’ – she was our confidant, our conscience and the little voice in our heads that said, “you can DO this” – or, occasionally “perhaps you shouldn’t do this”. Common sense was her forte. And, as much as she loved us with every fiber of her being, Dad was her prince and she has missed him terribly during the past 9 months. We are so happy that they are together again. Raised in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Joyce was the daughter of Stuart D. Irvine and Nora McGillivray Irvine and sister of Donald S. Irvine (Calgary) – all deceased. We are grateful that due to technology, Mum lived a full life with the aid of a pacemaker since 1982. They were ‘bonus’ years for Mum – which included a wonderful retirement of 27 years enjoying golf, smocking, knitting, bridge, spending time with friends and family in Kingston, Ajax, Florida, Peterborough, Victoria, Lindsay and of course, Prince Edward Island – their forever home. Special thanks for the loving and compassionate care provided to Mum by all the caregivers at Adelaide Place (Lindsay), Victoria Manor (Lindsay) and Fenelon Court (Fenelon Falls). What you do every day is difficult – but so important and appreciated. Thank you. A ‘going home’ celebration for both Mum and Dad is being planned for next year – after the pins are in at Green Gables Golf Course, naturally. With the interment of their ashes in the Cavendish Community Cemetery, next to their infant son, they will surely be home. Arrangements entrusted to Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, Peterborough. Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to Alzheimer Society of Canada.
