New Glasgow - Daniel Bernard Hughes, age 81, of New Glasgow, passed away Monday, October 23, 2017, in the QEII VG Site, Halifax. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late William and Mary (MacGillivary) Hughes. He was a retired accountant having worked for Sobeys, Casey Mercury and Kiley Pontiac before operating his own business, Manual Accounting. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church; past member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and past treasurer of the Pictou County Food Bank. Dan will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who was dedicated to his immediate and extended family. He valued volunteerism and instilled that value in his children as well as his love of music and sense of humour. His courage, pride, strength and determination were evident throughout his life. These characteristics he displayed played through until his last moments and served as comfort and inspiration to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (White); daughters: Karen (Kenny) MacPhee; Deb (Charlie) Cormier; grandkids: Chris, Wyatt, Isaac, Aislinn and Avery Cormier; Heaven and Shelby MacPhee; brothers: Jim (Ruth); Butch (Theresa). He was predeceased by son, Kenny; brothers: John, Frank, Eddie, Tony, Vince and Laurie; sisters: Evelyn, Kaye and Theresa. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral mass 1 p.m. Saturday in the Church of the Holy Name, Westville, with Fr. Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. A reception to follow in the Church Hall. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Pictou County Food Bank or the Children’s Wish Foundation.
