Sr. Lillian Morrison, formerly Sr. Joseph Leonard, 91, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany Motherhouse, on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, in the 69th year of her religious life.
In 1940, Lillian entered the Sisters of St. Martha and professed perpetual vows in August 1945.
Sr. Lillian lived in community and served in both Eastern and Western Canada. Her main area of service was health care.
In 1951, she graduated (RN) from St. Martha’s School of Nursing. Sister did post graduate work in obstetrics at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, obtained a diploma in psychiatric nursing from Seton Psychiatric Hospital, Baltimore Md., and a certificate in hospital organization and management from the Catholic Hospital Association.
She served in five different hospitals and was also director of Bethany Infirmary. For eight years Sr. Lillian lived at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, ministering in the pastoral care department.
Besides health care, Sr. Lillian gave a variety of services, including some homemaking. She was community leader in three different Martha convents.
Born in Mulgrave, N.S., Sr. Lillian was the eldest of seven children of the late Allan and Margaret (Strachan) Morrison.
Besides her parents, Sr. Lillian was predeceased by three sisters, Monica Lahey, Annie Campbell and Margaret Houle, and a brother, John.
She is survived by her sister, Violet DeCoste, Mulgrave; and brother, Stephen, Calgary, Alta.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Thursday, April 28 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, April, 29 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
