Cecilia Jane (Spencer) Harris

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of the matriarch of our family Janie who passed away on Remembrance Day November 11, 2017 at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. Janie was born December 30, 1923 on Scaterie Island. She attended school on Scaterie Island in her earlier years and moved to Main-A-Dieu at the age of 22. She married Jim on September 8, 1942 and had 6 children. Janie was post mistress of the Main-A-Dieu post office which was operated from her own home for 38 years. She was also an active member of the CWL for more than 50 years. Upon retiring she was known for her great love of travel. She accompanied family members all over the world, and wanted to experience every new adventure that was presented to her. She had an amazing love for all her family especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. She never missed an occasion to have everyone at her home. Playing cards was an important activity she enjoyed. Her favorite saying was the more the merrier.
Janie is survived by her 6 children, Mary Forgeron (Sandy), Iris Thoms, Carol MacLeod (Neil), Clemmie (Miriam), Darrell (Mary Lou) and Arlene Shepard (Kirk). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; one sister-in law, Theresa Spencer and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Jim in 1978, her parents Joe and Mayme Spencer; her son-in-law Peter; grand-daughter Jennifer; great granddaughter Madelyn and her 2 brothers Joe and Clem. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, November 15 with a Funeral service to be held 11 a.m., Thursday, both at the Immaculate Conception Parish with Father Evo Dipero officiating. Memorial donations in Janie’s memory may be made to Main-a-Dieu Costal Discovery Centre or to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The family would like to express their gratitude to both My Cape Breton Home for Seniors and Celtic Court for their wonderful care over the past 2 years.
Arrangements are under the direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral.
