PORTER, William Thomas (Bill)
1923 - 2017
Bill Porter, seventh and youngest son of Fisher and Ellen Porter and husband of Paulina, died at Rockyview General Hospital on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the age of 94 years after a brief illness. He was the best-ever father and grandfather to five doting daughters (Judith, Joan, Deborah (Bob), Jacqueline, and Tamara (Tim) and his six grandchildren (Brian, Grace, Harrison, Owen, Sandra, and Susi). Bill was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan into a farming family and once he turned 18, left to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following the end of WW II and discharge from the RCAF, he moved to Prince Albert to work with fledgling Saskatchewan Government Airways. Around this time he met Paulina, they married in 1949, and lived and loved in harmony until her death almost 40 years later. Over Bill's working life he held positions with Norcanair, Midwest Aviation, Corpac and CP Air, and operated a flying school in High River. In recent years he made regular pilgrimages to the family farm in Saskatchewan where he was spoiled and gently teased in equal measure, by his nephews Richard, Russell, and Bob (the sons he never had). He had infinite patience and curiosity about the world and how things work, whether politics or machinery. Most importantly, he lived in the present, not ruminating about the past or fixated on the future - both he and the dogs he loved over his lifetime understood that now is all we have. Funeral service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 6351 Ranchview Drive NW, Calgary, on Saturday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Calgary Humane Society, the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society or a charity of your choice.
