It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Mary Isabel MacLean, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. Isabel passed away peacefully in the care of the palliative care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Ottawa Brook, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Dan John and Sarah MacNeil.
Isabel raised a family of 12 children, who were and still are continuously devoted to her.
Isabel enjoyed Sunday afternoon card games with her family, which bought many laughs and memorable moments that will stay forever in their hearts. She also enjoyed knitting, playing TV bingo and watching NASCAR racing with her sons.
Isabel spent her entire family life nurturing and raising 12 children who are very proud to call her “Maâ€.
Isabel is survived by her husband of 54 years, Alfred MacLean. Isabel was blessed with seven daughters, Donalda (John), Pauline (Robert Smith), Irene (Joe Hennessey), Dena, Flora (Brian Leblanc), Freda (Dennis Hearn) and Leona (Leonard Sidney). She was also blessed with five sons, Ray (Rose), Chuck, Eddie (Elizabeth), Jamie and Scott (Alicia). Isabel is also survived by her loving brother, Michael ‘Shorty’ MacNeil and ever caring sister, Rhodena McLellan, Ottawa Brook. She had 23 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who adored her tremendously.
Isabel was predeceased by her infant son, Daniel Edward MacLean.
Visitation for Isabel will be held at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14 at St. Joseph Church, Reserve Mines, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Isabel’s memory may be made to palliative care or the ALS Society.
