Lloyd William Langille
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lloyd William Langille on Dec. 17, 2017. He was husband, father, brother, uncle and mentor to many in the Draft Horse World.
Lloyd was born in Tatamagouche, NS, on Sept. 17, 1932 to the late Leonard and Mabel (MacQueen) Langille.
He is survived by wife Marlene (Crockett) Langille, Hopewell; daughter Sherry (Stephen Lewis), Cannington, Ontario; sons, Ken at home; Don (Vonda), Meeker, OK. USA; granddaughter Mesha Wolfe; and great-granddaughter Ava, Meeker, OK, USA.; brother Howard, Truro, NS; and many nieces and nephews. Lloyd was predeceased by brother Mervyn, sister-in-law Margaret Langille, foster sisters Anne Irving and Georgina Spinney, grandson Colby Wolfe, Meeker, OK, USA.
Lloyd grew up on the family farm in Oliver, Colchester Co; joined the CN Railway in 1951 as a telegraph operator, retiring after 37 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Hopewell and had served on the Board of Managers.
His real passion throughout his life was draft horses. He started driving horses as a child on the farm and working horses in the woods as a teenager.
Married in 1957 – nearly 60yrs ago! He started showing horses in 1959. He brought carloads of horses to Hopewell by railcar from Western Canada from 1960 to 1966. The family showed horses for over fifty years. Lloyd judged many horse shows throughout Canada, USA and in England, including two World Percheron Congresses and the Calgary Stampede.
Lloyd’s other passion was working in the woods and preserving his woodlots. Often using horses to draw the logs and wood out of the woods.
Lloyd always worked with young horses or problem horses; training them and bringing them along to be good show horses or work horses. Many many people in Pictou Co and beyond enjoyed taking sleigh rides behind these young horses for many years – many different people and many different horses.
Lloyd loved to help young drivers learn to drive the big hitches and become better horsemen and women. He understood a horse’s mind and loved to get new people involved and educated. Many many horse owners would call or visit and ask for advice which he would freely give if you were truly interested in learning!
He was a sportsman both in and out of the show ring – a trait that he preached to us all!
He leaves behind a legacy in the Draft Horse World that won’t soon be forgotten!
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Thursday, December 21, 2017 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Friday December 22, 2017 in First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell with Bonnie Crockett officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery.
