Carol Harris

Leona “Carol” Harris, age 83, passed away on December 24th, 2017 surrounded by her family in the Palliative Care Unit, at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow.

She was born in New Glasgow the daughter of the late Dwight and Isabel (Gould) Smith and grew up on the family farm in Central West River as the oldest of four children.

Carol was an employee of Canada Cement Lafarge in Halifax until her retirement when she returned to her family home in Central West River in 1987. She took on many volunteer roles in the community and was an active member of the United Church Women and St. Luke’s United Church. Carol had a great pride and passion for gardening and her homestead property was a renowned setting for many wedding and graduation portraits over the years and won her several gardening awards. Her love of birds took her on many trips to the United States, Costa Rica, and several winters on the Gulf of Mexico with her husband, Bill. She also enjoyed many globetrotting trips and created many special memories with friends such as floating in the Dead Sea, touring the Galapagos Islands, camel trekking in Morocco, and boating down the Amazon River. Holding a special place in her heart was Grand Manan Island where she spent many summers walking the shores to birdwatch and beachcomb.

Left to honour Carol and remember her are Carol’s husband, Wilfred "Bill" Harris and her four children, Susan Logue (Richard), Fern McCuish (Scott Saunders), Dean McCuish and Krista McCuish (Tim Garriock); seven grandchildren; Adam Basler, Corrina Basler, Andrew Logue, Mark Logue, Peter Lang, Leah Garriock, and Ewan Garriock; a sister, Joan Wack (John); brothers Douglas Smith (Linda) and Larry Smith (Jean) and many nieces and nephews.

Carol will always be remembered as a bright, shining light and will be forever regarded as someone with strength, determination, and dedication to her community. She will be greatly missed by all and we will hold her dearly in our hearts.

Funeral services will be held on 30th December at 2 pm at St. Luke’s United Church, Saltsprings. The family will greet friends from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on 29th December at Eagles Funeral Home in Westville. The family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all the staff at Aberdeen’s Palliative Care Unit in New Glasgow, for their attentiveness and loving care.
