Annabelle MacKinnon

Annabelle MacKinnon Annabelle MacKinnon

Annabelle MacKinnon (May 6, 1925 - Jan. 2, 2018) only lived in two homes in her long life: her father’s family home which was moved from “rear” Beaver Cove to the young New Waterford’s Leadbeater St. in the early 1920s, and the one her husband built on County Rd. (now Hinchey Avenue) when they married in 1947. The continuity is reflective of Annie’s essence. She valued strong family ties, and personal family stories. She brought that to her ties with and knowledge about what could seem like all of the families of early New Waterford. If you wanted to know something about your great-grandmother, you could ask Annie.
She lived to swim and skate in her youth and served the effort of WW2 on the homefront working in an apple canning factory. Born in New Waterford, Annabelle was the oldest child of the late Neil A MacKinnon and Florence (MacIssac) MacKinnon. She was also predeceased by her husband, Joseph Irving MacKinnon; brothers, Hughie (Hilda), Donnie, and sister, Tina (Mickey) Boudreau. Annabelle is survived by son, Ron, of Guelph, Ontario as well as 20 nephews and nieces and their children. She loved them deeply. No one appreciated more the blessings of good relatives and friends, including especially in later years, her sisters-in-law, Reynelda (MacKinnon) Bruce and Hilda (MacVicar) MacKinnon.
Very special in her life were her long-time cribbage partner Effie Nugent, and her great friends Dellie and Jean Young, who along with friendship, provided her with many years of maintaining her independence in her own family home. Special gratitude is due to Dr R. Azer for years of attentive care, and to the wonderful nurses at New Waterford Hospital who gave her last days which were miraculously pain free and peaceful. Following Annabelle’s wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Annie’s memory may be made to the New Waterford Hospital or the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
